Texas Tech Athletics has made big plans for the future of their football program. In 2022, they announced renovations to Jones AT&T Stadium and the construction of a new Womble Football Center across the street. The project, led by representative Logan West, aims to create one of the largest football facilities in the country by linking the two buildings with a pedestrian bridge over 6th Street. The combined size of the facilities will be approximately 320,000 square feet. This exciting project is sure to take Texas Tech football to new heights.
In addition to the renovations and expansion of the football facilities, Texas Tech Athletics has also revealed plans to upgrade the amenities and infrastructure at Jones AT&T Stadium. This includes the installation of new seating, updated concessions and restrooms, and improved accessibility for disabled individuals. The upgraded stadium will provide a better game day experience for fans and players alike. The project is expected to be completed in time for the 2024 football season. Texas Tech Athletics is dedicated to investing in their football program and creating a world-class facility for their players and fans.
West stated that the construction project will continue through the next football season, but it will not impact Texas Tech’s ability to host home games. The demolition of the Womble Center will begin after the next football season. The construction in the south end zone will run through the 2023 game season, but there will still be home games held at the field. The demolition of the football training facility will begin after the last home game in 2023.
According to West, the project has faced a few minor challenges, specifically with the wiring running from the stadium through the school. However, overall, the project has not encountered many obstacles. West explained that there were fiber and copper lines running through both the buildings being demolished and other areas of the campus. These lines were used to serve the rest of the campus as well as the buildings being demolished. In order to facilitate the demolition work, it was necessary to temporarily redirect these lines. Despite this additional logistical consideration, the project has been progressing smoothly and is on track to be completed as planned. West assured that all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the project.
West also stated that the new south end zone will be a major upgrade for the football team and fans, with a range of new facilities and amenities. Some of the key features of the end zone will include direct access to the field, premium seating options, 17 premium level suites, and 500 seats in a new bar area. In addition, there will be new concessions available and offices for the football staff.
One of the most notable aspects of the new end zone is its connection to the Womble Football Center. This connection will allow players and coaches to easily move back and forth between the two facilities, improving operational efficiency and streamlining their daily routines. West emphasized that the design of the project, including the connection between the south end zone and the new football training facility, is focused on creating efficiencies and boosting Texas Tech’s recruiting power.
The south end zone is set to open in May 2024, with the Womble Football Center following in September of the same year. These new facilities are expected to provide a significant boost to the football team and enhance the game day experience for fans.
