Michigan Stadium, also known as the “Big House,” will maintain its official capacity of 107,600 for football games this fall, despite some modifications to the design of the tunnel, according to a university spokesperson. The spokesperson explained that while some seats near the entrance of the tunnel will be removed, the overall capacity of the venue will not be impacted. This is due to the presence of standing-room space in the stadium’s four towers that can be utilized to compensate for the decrease in bleacher seating.
The decision to remove seats near the tunnel was prompted by an incident that occurred after the 2022 Michigan State game, when a fan reached down and touched Spartan coach Mel Tucker’s head. As a result, the fan has been banned from attending games at the Big House. In response, the Big Ten reprimanded Michigan for failing to provide adequate protection for personnel of both home and visiting teams when entering and leaving the playing arena.
Michigan Stadium has a rich history and was inaugurated in 1927 with a victory over Ohio Wesleyan. Since then, the capacity of the stadium has risen from 72,000 to a peak of 109,900 from 2010-14. However, the official capacity shrank by 2,300 seats ahead of the 2015 season due to reconfigurations to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Despite these changes, the Big House continues to be a premier destination for college football fans across the country.
The Big House, located in the United States, is one of the most renowned sports venues in the world. With a massive capacity of over 100,000 people, it is known for its ability to host large crowds of sports enthusiasts. Over the years, the stadium has played host to a variety of sports including football, soccer, and hockey. The highest recorded attendance at the Big House was 115,100 during the 2013 Michigan vs. Notre Dame football game, which remains a record to this day.
In 2022, the Wolverines had an average attendance of 110,246 fans at the Big House, making it the highest attendance in college football. The team had an impressive record, going undefeated at home as part of their perfect regular season and later winning the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This further cements the Big House’s reputation as one of the most competitive and challenging venues for college football teams to play in.
In 2023, the Big House will host seven games for the Wolverines, including East Carolina, UNLV, Bowling Green, Rutgers, Indiana, Purdue and Ohio State. The season, as well as the team’s defense of their back-to-back Big Ten titles, will begin on September 2nd.
